Blogiversary Mini Birdcage Giveaway

Just recently I passed my two-year Blogiversary. I've loved meeting & talking with all sorts of funny, interesting, encouraging & kind people with interests similar to mine. I want to mark two years in some small way, & I've decided to do so by giving two little things I love.

If you'll leave a comment, in one week I'll draw a name & contact the winner. You may leave a comment on one or both posts.

Lorelei received the bracelet I made for her & liked it so much she mentioned it on her lovely blog. Her jewelry designs are eclectic & beautiful. She uses extra-special & interesting components. Through our email messages & her blog she has already introduced me to several wonderful & new to me Etsy artists. Everything from buttons, to lampwork glass beads.

Visions of Birdcages...

Since I began making bird cages, I've wanted to make a Calder - style mobile out of them. I've never accumulated enough cages at one time to try it, but I'm closing in a little. I want to make some much smaller & a bit bigger too. My largest cage to date (Ashes) was @ 6" tall. Right now I'm working on a tiny one using an old metal cap about 3/4" across...

I also think it would be interesting to use one in a diorama. I adore dioramas.

I wasn't satisfied with this birdcage, so now I've fiddled around with it until I'm not sure whether it will be salvageable or not. Salvageable; as in ~it really looks the way I want it to~. I used a slightly heavier gauge wire on this one, & but that didn't really impact the work... Seeing it again in this state makes me wish I had left it alone, but it was missing something.

Miss Flite's Birds

This is the first in a small group I envisioned. In Dickens' Bleak House, there is an old woman, a minor character; Miss Flite. She frequents the proceedings at the law courts & in particular her interest is in the protracted case 'Jarndyce & Jarndyce'. She has squandered her lifetime waiting for the settlement to come & in that process she has lost a portion of her sanity and other valuable attributes & resources. She keeps a large number of birds with allegorical names like Hope, Youth, Beauty, and Words, Confusion, Jargon, Plunder, Precedent, Despair, Ruin, Sheepskin, Spinach & Gammon to signify the consumption of all things by fruitless law cases.
This little birdcage is 3 - 4 inches tall, made with steel wire, tart tin, chain, a bit of mirror, bell, etc. The bird 'Despair' has escaped although the cage has no door. There was a tiny feather in the bottom, which must have blown away! I'm working on another, similar, but not identical. I'd like to try making a mobile of them.
