Soon it will be slipper weather. Maybe it won't, but I'm going to begin thinking about slippers. I keep imagining a chill in the morning air.

French Flower Beading

I added some new info. to my bag of tricks this past weekend. I took a class in French Flower Beading. I've wanted to learn how to do this ever since I thrifted a book on this art. I've looked through the book numerous times, but it seemed to me that there were too many elements involved to teach myself from the book. Learning some things is really helped along by a live teacher. This was one of those times.

I learned the basic techniques & made a page of 'samples' to pin up on the wall in my bead area. Then I made a little bouquet of African Violets. The stunning image above is from ebay. These chrysanthemums sold for $130.

There was some talk about the thrifted, OOP book; ...cruel talk about the very same book selling for $350 on ebay. It just isn't true. But I have a nice HCDJ copy of Bead Design; written during the most recent renaissance of French Flower Beading - the 1960s & 70s.

The obsessive tendencies kicked right in, I cam home & bookmarked 5 or 10 flower beading sites & purchased just one book-let on the subject.

I don't know whether I want to make flowers with these techniques or something else. It will take a while to incorporate this craft. It's a craft which requires a little preplanning - stringing entire hanks of seed beads on wire in advance. I probably can't do this on the floor or my bed, but I am excited to experiment further.

Owly Shadow Puppets

My first crafting passion began with a class in puppet-making when I was 10. I made finger puppet after finger puppet. I have a special spot in my heart just for puppets. I am not a puppeteer, however. My husband can animate a puppet so well that I forget him for a minute & just enjoy the puppet's personality.

Andrea Everman of Owly Shadow Puppets makes the coolest shadow puppets. Her website even has a lesson plan for teachers. This lesson plan can be used to drive a writing or performing activity - instant enthusiasm! Surely everyone would enjoy some aspect of this project. See her website for a real dose of puppet enthusiasm.

Woodland Pincushion

Such a busy week! & 100+ degrees. Unseasonably warm.

I've just finished reading Nature Noir: A Park Ranger's Patrol in the Sierra.

Slated to be drowned by a dam, the California state park patrolled
by the author of this haunting memoir is a "condemned landscape"
of gorgeous river canyons hemmed in by exurban sprawl
and peopled by eccentric gold miners, squatting families,
drug dealers and miscellaneous drunken, gun-waving rowdies, a place
where "turkey vultures floated... savoring the hot air for the
inevitable attrition of heat, drought and violence."

It's set in the area where I live. Recommended.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm pretty knowledeable about park rangering because I've read all but one of the 14 Anna Pidgeon mysteries by Nevada Barr; each is set in a different National Park.
Front Page - Warm
Curated by Dear Dodo whose own artwork is very beautiful & mysterious indeed.
naptime
inspired by my friend Carolyn -
Warm summer afternoon & even your love of numbers & the challenge of hiding customers' assets from the Federal Government are failing to keep you awake. Nap in style. Trust me; it will appear that you're deep in thought.
